Steering System ।। Vehicle System ।।

Steering is a system of components, linkages, etc. that allows a vehicle to follow a desired course.

Steering System converts the rotation of the steering wheel into a swiveling movement of the road wheels in such a way that the steering-wheel rim turns a long way to move the road wheels a short way.

Steering allows the operator to control an automobile's direction by turning a steering wheel. Most vehicles today have front-wheel steering, with some now also being designed with four- wheel steering.

As a vehicle turns, the front two wheels do not follow the same arc path. When turning to the right, the right wheel follows a smaller radius while the left follows a larger radius. The only thing that the wheel paths have in common is that the arc paths have the same center point. This turning geometry is specifically engineered to allow smooth operation and calculated turning radius. The typical steering mechanism consists of a power steering pump, rack and pinion, tie rods, drag linkage, steering arm, steering king-pin, steering column, and other electronics and supports.
